Thuti - Kenya

This coffee got its name from the homonymous wash station Thuti and its producer is Othaya Farmers Co-operative Society, which has its own dry mill located in Gatuyaini. This is where all the coffee processed in the various wet mills is taken for further processing. After milling is done, the coffee is packed in export bags. Before the coffee is taken to the warehouse ready for marketing, the Society has a cupping laboratory where quality analysis is done by a qualified cupper.

Most of the coffees from Nyeri develop and mature slowly producing extra hard beans. This quality is also evident in the cup. This is why Nyeri is traditionally known as the heart of Kenya.

The soils of Nyeri County are red, volcanic, rich in phosphorus and well-drained. Nyeri County has cool temperatures and fertile central highlands, lying between the Eastern base of the Aberdare (Nyandarua) Range, which forms part of the Eastern end of the Great Rift Valley, and the Western slopes of Mt. Kenya. Nyeri town (county headquarters) acts as a destination for those visiting Aberdare National Park and Mt. Kenya’s black gold coffee.

The Thuti wet mill has a producer membership of around 500 farmers (400 men and 100 women) and is located around 2km from the Karima Hills.

The River Thuti also flows through this area.
