La Esmeralda Catuai Panama

Coffee quality is a product of altitude, variety and processing. This means that the responsibility of the growers is to pick only the ripest most perfect fruits and process them as perfectly as possible to bring out the full taste that nature put into them. The farm Hacienda La Esmeralda belongs to the Peterson family. At the farm Hacienda la Esmeralda they start by carefully instructing those who hand pick the fruit, to only pick the completely ripe, red fruits.

Hacienda La Esmeralda is a farm in the mountains of western Panama. Coffee grows from 1000-1500 meters. The farms employ about 45 people on a permanent basis, swelling to 300 during the coffee harvest. Including families, this means that over 1,000 people depend directly on the farm for sustenance. Farm direction has been in the hands of the Peterson family for the past 35 years and is now into its third generation.

First comes sustainability of people. The farm’s business practices must always be such that the products will readily sell at a level which will keep everyone (owners and workers) fed, clothed, educated and in good health.

The farm’s soils are volcanic with high levels of organic material, poor in minerals and with pH values of 4.5 to 6. They continue to plant various trees and grasses as well as strict contour planting to keep it that way. Generally, they have more than 75 large trees per hectare that they prune twice a year. These help with shade during the dry season and provide a wealth of organic material.

All of the above are things the farm does to sustain life, people and land. Esmeralda is blessed because it is based on differentiation and because so far buyers share the farm’s concerns about the sustainability of people and land.

Catuai coffees have long been planted in Panama, and this variety is well-loved for its high production, disease resistance, and clean, bright cup. At Hacienda La Esmeralda, they grow a selection of Catuai variety across their farms, and harvest it with the same care and attention as our other fine coffees.

Diamond Mountain lot comes from two of their most productive and renowned farms: Jaramillo and Cañas Verdes.
